Apprenticeships offer a great next step no matter what your exam results, Liberal Democrat Christine Tinker said today.

In Shrewsbury & Atcham 3,780 young people have started an apprenticeship in the last four years and more are being created.

Christine said apprenticeships were ideal for hundreds of students expecting exam results. She said: "A-levels or university are not the 'only way'… all young people should have an opportunity to get on in life and apprenticeships are a great way to ensure that.

"In the Shrewsbury area apprenticeships are an unrivalled success story. The schemes offer young people the chance to learn and get valuable work experience."

The biggest expansion in apprenticeships since the 1950s has seen 1.8m youngsters start schemes across the UK in the last four years. Liberal Democrats have made it easier for businesses to take on apprentices, with £1,500 grants offered to firms which employ a young person.

The Government has also invested £550m in revamping colleges to make it easier for schemes to be offered.
